Barhi Dates: Many of our barhi customers first tasted one at Chez Panisse, thanks to chef, restauranteur, food writer, and friend to farmers Alice Waters. “These fruits are amber or light reddish brown, soft, moist... eating one is like biting into a caramel cloud,” David Karp, Los Angeles Times Food 42 dates per pound

Chewy Barhi: these are fresh Barhi from the big trees that fell into the bag (that surrounds the date bunch) and got a little drier and chewier. These are new crop Barhi but slightly different texture: Chewy.

Yellow Barhi Dates: Yellow Barhi or Fresh Date
Crisp like an apple, tasting of sugarcane, honey, and coconut, yellow barhi dates are beloved by
natives of the Middle East and North Africa.
Yellow is an early stage of ripeness. When they are fully ripe, they are called Barhi Dates and
have a flavor and texture all their own.

Medjool Dates: Imported from Morocco to America in 1927, planted in Indio in 1935, and offshoots distributed to date growers in 1944, Medjools are large, rich, classic dates.

Khadrawi Dates: Chewy, complex, and caramel-like.

Amber Dates: Pretty shape and color, sweet cinnamon flavor.

Dayri Dates: The purple date (also mauve). Strong flavor, hint of vanilla. Glossy exterior and creamy interior. Milder than a Medjhool but sometimes mistaken for one. Versatile. Great in salads and fruit cakes.

Deglet Noor: Brown sugar, pecan, nutty, mild date

Zahidi Dates: The butter date. Great golden color, mildly sweet flavor. For people who say they "don't like dates." We know. They never had a good one!

What is a Seedling Date?
A Seedling Date is a date that volunteered from seed, as Robert says, a date seed that grew in an optimum location where it was allowed to grow up and be judged on the quality of its fruit. Date palms can be male or female. Many seedlings grow up to be male date palms, which produce pollen but not fruit (dates). Therefore most dates are grown from offshoots. Each female date palm produces 20-30 offshoots in its lifetime. Dates grown from seed are unpredictable, but most date growers nurture a few seedlings and eventually produce their own varieties, exclusive to their farm. Everett DaVall of Dates by DaVall was famous for his Empress variety. Shields has the Brunette. And so forth. Flying Disc Ranch has Cire, Honeyball, Honeynut, Desert Duster, Duro, Skinny, Long Skinny, and who knows what the next seedling may be?! Robert names the dogs and he also names the dates.

We have not set the date prices because Robert has not had the chance to assess the crop yet. Harvest has not begun! But it will, by next week.

If you’ve been with us for awhile, you know our prices do not change much year to year. The following is some general information and we will update the page as soon as dates are available. 

Dates:

  • The price per pound ranges from $8 to 16.

Citrus: (Available in winter and spring) 

  • Minneola Tangelo (aka Honeybell): $4 per pound.
  • Ruby Blush Grapefruit, Blood Orange, and Lemon: $3 per pound.
  • Temple Orange (aka Royal Mandarin): $4 per pound.

Wholesale Prices:

  • Wholesale is available on 12 pounds minimum of the same date variety, except for Barhi dates, which are 8 pounds minimum.
  • Wholesale prices for dates range from $6.40 to $12.80 per pound. 
  • Case prices for dates range from $76 to $153.

Packaging:

  • Dates can be packaged in a number of ways, including plastic, cellophane, or paper bags; adorable quail egg kraft boxes (perfect for when barhi are fragile), 1 pound paper boxes, and 2, 3, 5, and 11 pound cardboard boxes (think pizza box weight).
  • Please specify your packaging preference or requirement; if you do not, I shall pack and ship in the way that makes the most sense for the date’s safety and your economy. Photos of all these options are coming soon.
